JVS Export is a leading manufacturer and exporter of home textiles and the customers of JVS include the likes of Wal-Mart, Lifestyle, Kohl’s and Reliance Industries Limited.

At present the solar power plant by Vikram Solar for JVS Export will be the first power plant for that particular area (Village: Ragunathamadai, District: Virudunagar, Tamil Nadu).  The project will be executed in 100 days, which would be a major achievement. Vikram Solar will be fully responsible for supplying the Vikram make solar photovoltaic modules and other associated equipment including installation and commissioning of the facility followed by O&M.


This project is helping preserve the non renewable resources by generating power naturally and has immensely helped the locals of the area by generating employment for them.

The New SPS Solution for Sustainable, High Performance Coatings



Innovnano, an expert manufacturer of high performance ceramic powders, has developed highly pure 4YSZ (4 mol% yttria stabilised zirconia) for use in suspension. This new breed of nanostructured material is ideally suited for suspension plasma spray (SPS), a powerful new method for the application of coatings, including thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) for turbine engines. To complement this technique, Innovnano has developed its nanostructured 4YSZ powder as a stable ethanol-based suspension, which, when applied by SPS, produces coatings with unparalleled chemical homogeneity. This translates to improved mechanical and physical properties, including exceptional thermal insulation, high melting points and superior adhesion to the underlying components. Such properties ensure that the resulting coatings can withstand some of the most demanding conditions and extreme engine temperatures (up to 1400 °C). This has important economic implications, opening up the possibility of higher burn engines for enhanced fuel efficiency, while providing a more sustainable and environmentally friendly TBC solution, reducing overall carbon footprints.


As a more versatile approach, SPS can produce coatings with various morphologies, including columnar structures, enabling users to obtain specific coating properties that are optimally suited for the end-purpose. Wallwork Group: Surface Engineering to Improve Metal Hardness at Offshore Europe Std 4D83



Offshore Europe is the showcase for heat treatment and surface engineering specialist, the  Wallwork Group, offering metal treatments that improve wear resistance, fatigue strength and corrosion resistance of systems and components in offshore plant.  Based on thermal processing or the application of advanced micro-thin coatings, the processes can be customised to the needs of the offshore application and the harsh working environment.

For the treatment of wear components, there is a complete family of nitriding processes.  These include salt based nitro-carburising processing, which diffuses nitrogen and carbon into the metal surface, to impart wear resistance and fatigue strength. Subsequently, components may be quench-polish-quenched (QPQ) processed to improve surface finish and add an additional oxidised layer for enhanced corrosion resistance.  Steel, iron and ferritic alloys can all be treated in this way.


This nitriding process is also available under several trade names including Tufftride, Tenifer, Kolene, Nu-Tride and Melonite.  Unlike gas nitriding there is no need for chromium or aluminium to be present in the steel, however, where alloy steels are used high surface hardness can be achieved and increased case depths.


Alloy steel components can also be surface hardened by gas nitriding to case harden to various depths depending on the needs of the application.  This is commonly applied to steel alloys whose chemical composition contains nitride forming elements such as chromium.  Gas nitriding is especially suited to the treatment of wear components in plant and machinery such as motors, pumps and compressors.


The treatment of down bore pipes and similar hollow vessels poses particular problems for offshore operators and petrochemical companies.  To solve these problems Wallwork offers InnerArmor from Sub-One of California.  By using plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD) to deposit a protective coating by gas ionisation, InnerArmor gives an even thin film of highly resistive titanium carbide or diamond like carbon (DLC) that is totally pin-hole free.  Highly resistant to abrasive wear, erosion and corrosion these coatings extend plant life and provide better material flow through smoother bores and improve uptime to enhance productivity.

Freezing Time and Bowl Preparation


The freezer bowl must be completely frozen before you begin your recipe. Before freezing, wash and dry the bowl. The length of time needed to reach the frozen state depends on how cold your freezer is. It is recommended that you place the freezer bowl in the back of your freezer where it is the coldest. Be sure to place the freezer bowl on a flat surface in its upright position for even freezing.

LocoMotion: MMA8453 with Interrupts…



In the previous post about the MMA8453_N0m1 library we talked about how to get the stream of raw XYZ data back from the accelerometer.  In this post we will be getting into some of the more advanced features of the MMA8453.


The two advanced features that the MMA8453_N0m1 library breaks out for easier use are the interrupt motion detection, and the interrupt shake detection.  Now motion and shake sound like the same things, but in fact they are slightly different.  What motion detection does is allows you to detect any type of motion above a certain force threshold.  While shake is more specific and allows for only detecting sharp fast motion, by using a highpass filter to remove gentler smoother rolling motions.  The library includes 1 example for each feature.  However the way the library is designed, the two features are used in a very similar manner so we will only cover one here.


So lets assume you have the library and circuit still setup from the previous post on the MMA8453_N0m1 lib.  The example we will be explaining is the shake example, because its ever so slightly more complex than the motion.  Though really its almost identical.  After making the library object just as before, the first thing you will do is initialize the library in the arduino setup() function, with the following function call:


So the first parameter in this function, which is currently set at “32?  the shake detection acceleration force threshold, which is a value between 0-127.  This value is calculated through a simple formula as follows.  The gravitational threshold you desire divided by 0.063.  So for example in the above line we do this: 2g/ 0.063g = 31.746, and since the parameter is an int, lets round that value to 32.


The next 3 parameters are just enabling each axis for shake detection; listed X, Y, Z.  So if your project only needs to detect a shaking motion over 1 axis you can disable the others. The second last parameter is a boolean to enable one of the INT pins on the MMA8453. So, to put it simply, True = pin 2, False = pin1. The last parameter is to set the Arduino interrupt pin number.  In this example we are setting it to pin 2.  However you could set this to any interrupt pin you have available.  Included in the example folder is an example that uses pin change interrupt to use a non standard interrupt pin.  After that you are pretty much done.  There are just a few simple lines left to add.


You must call the update function at the top of the loop().  The shake function returns true or false if shake is detected, and the shakeAxisX(), shakeAxisY(), shakeAxisZ() functions will return true if a particular axis is shaken. That’s all there is to it!  The motion functions are almost identical except it will only return whether or not there is motion, not which axis is in motion.  Well I tried to make it more complex, then the previous post.  That formula had you sweating, didn’t it?

Wireless researchers host ‘Game-Jam’



It is difficult to provide a detailed and comprehensive picture of wireless network data performance in the real world. Although providers like AT&T and Verizon offer coverage maps on their web sites, there is no reliable source of end-to-end network performance across different providers and across a range of locations during different times of day.

CSAIL graduate students Victor Costan, Yu-han (Tiffany) Chen, Ravi Netravali, and Jonathan Perry are looking to build a network map by gathering information on wireless network performance through smartphone games, as part of new research underway in Professor Hari Balakrishnan’s Networks and Mobile Systems Group at CSAIL and Wireless@MIT. The games would drive players to certain locations where there is sparse information on network statistics in order to gather data.


From May 17 – May 19, the group will host a location-based, Android “Game-Jam,” a two-day event dedicated to bringing game developers together to build a host of mobile games that will aid in this research. The hosts are looking for game developers with experience in Android or web programming, graphic designers, and audio professionals to participate. The Game-Jam will start at 7:00 p.m. on May 17 at the Patil/Kiva conference room (32-G449) in the Stata Center, and will wrap up May 19 at 9:00 p.m. with prizes and awards. All members of the MIT community and beyond are invited to participate.

Once the event is completed, the games will be used to gather network performance statistics and build a comprehensive map of how the network behaves across different regions. The information will be useful in not only providing data on how the network operates for mobile phone and Internet providers, but also to provide a reliable source of information for researchers looking to improve wireless and mobile device connectivity.

“People will hopefully be able to get better performance because of this data,” Perry says. “Researchers can use the information for research on improving network reliability and performance, as it will provide data on data transport latency and throughput for cellular and WiFi networks.” Users of the mobile games will be aware that the games are gathering information on network connectivity to be used in scientific research, but they will not have to expend any effort, beyond playing the game, in order to help gather information on network connectivity.


Participants are encouraged to express their creativity when developing games during the Game-Jam. Examples of different types of games that might be useful in gathering network statistics include games for individual players that set goals for players to achieve and social games that allow groups of players to collaborate or compete to achieve a common goal.

Electrical switch for magnetism



Researchers at MIT have developed a new way to control the movement of the magnetic domains is the key technology of magnetic memory systems such as computer hard disk. The new approach requires little energy to burn and no power to maintain the stored information and could lead to a new generation of extremely low energy storage.


The new approach, applying a voltage controlled magnetism, not in a magnetic field. This can lead to a magnetic storage in which data is written to the microscopic Nanowires with magnetic tracks, or "bits" of data, hurtling along them as cars on the racetrack. The new findings, described in an article published this week in the journal Nature Nanotechnology, written by Associate Professor of materials science and engineering, and graduate student Jeffrey Beach Uwe Bauer and Satoru Emori.


"For hundreds of years, if you had a magnetic material, and you wanted to change the direction that was magnetized materials, you need another magnet," explains Beach. His work represents a whole new way to switch the magnetic State, using only the changes in voltage, without a magnetic field — a process much lower power consumption. Moreover, the magnetic switches when it keeps this change, ensuring stable data storage requiring no power except during reading and writing.


The researchers suggest that this effect can be used to include new concepts such as "racetrack memory," with the magnetic bits, speeding up the magnetic stripe. Although the laboratory demonstration of such devices, no one came close to viability for data storage: the missing piece was a way to precisely control position and select the individual electrically magnetic bits, racing along the magnetic stripe.


"Magnetic fields, it is very difficult to localize," Beach says: If you are trying to create a tiny magnetic bits on the area or Trek, the magnetic fields of electromagnets that are used to read and write data tend to spread out, making it difficult to prevent interaction with neighboring bands, especially, as the devices are getting smaller and smaller.


However, the new system accurately, you can select individual magnetic bits represented by tiny domains in the area. MIT device can stop the movement of magnetic domains, racing at 20 meters per second, or about 45 mph., "on a dime," said Beach. They can then be released on demand by simply switching the applied voltage.


To achieve this feat, the MIT team built a new type of device that controls the magnetism in the same way as transistor controls the flow of electricity. The key element is a layer of material Ion-rich, in which atoms have been stripped of electrons, leaving them with electric charge. Voltage to a small electrode above the thin layer can attract or repel these ions; ions, in turn, you can modify the properties of the base magnet and stop the flow of magnetic domains. The researchers suggest that this could lead to a new family of "magnetic ion" devices.


The effect depends on the chemical interactions between thin layers of magnetic metal and solid-state electrolyte materials sandwiched together at the border, Beach said. "So it's really a chemistry of interphase, which defines magnetic properties," he said. In practice, such a system would use wire or strip of ferromagnetic material with a series of regularly spaced, small electrodes on top of it. Magnetic bits between these electrodes can then selectively written or read.


After you specify the orientation of the magnetic bits between the two electrodes of the device "it essentially will retain his position even in the absence of power and direction," Beach said. Thus, in practice, you can install the magnetic bits, "then turn off until you need to read it back," he said. Because the magnetic switch requires no magnetic field, there is next to no dissipation of energy, "said Beach. What's more, by pinning of magnetic bits is extremely strong, resulting in stable storage.


The key components of the system are "very simple oxide materials," says Bauer. In particular, these tests are used gadolinium oxide, which is already used in capacitors and semiconductors. Dan Allwood, a researcher in materials physics at the University of Sheffield, who was not involved in the study, said that he "not only offers a Novel technical ways to manage dynamic magnetization patterned nanostructures, but also presents new physical processes in how stress can affect the magnetic behavior in General. Detailed understanding of the origin of these effects may allow the creation of simple, low-power information and technological devices. "

Cybersecurity Deemed Central To U.S.-China Relations



President Obama used an unusually lengthy and informal desert summit to present Chinese President Xi Jingping with detailed evidence of intellectual property theft emanating from his country, as a top U.S. official declared Saturday that cybersecurity is now at the "center of the relationship" between the world's largest economies.


While there were few clear policy breakthroughs on cybersecurity, U.S. officials said Obama and Xi were in broad agreement over the need for North Korea to be denuclearized. And both countries expressed optimism that the closer personal ties forged between the two leaders during the California summit could stem the mistrust between the world powers.


Still, Obama's national security adviser Tom Donilon said resolving cybersecurity issues would be "key to the future" of the relationship. Obama told Xi that "if it's not addressed, if it continues to be this direct theft of United States property, that this was going to be very difficult problem in the economic relationship and was going to be an inhibitor to the relationship really reaching its full potential," Donilon said during a briefing with reporters following the summit.


In their own recap of the meetings, Chinese officials said Xi opposed all forms of cyberspying, but claimed no responsibility for attacks against the U.S. "Cybersecurity should not become the root cause of mutual suspicion and frictions between our two countries. Rather, it should be a new bright spot in our cooperation," said Yang Jiechi, Xi's senior foreign policy adviser.


Yang said the two leaders "blazed a new trail" away from the two nations' past differences and "talked about cooperation and did not shy away from differences." Obama and Xi met for about eight hours over the course of two days at the sweeping Sunnylands estate, marking a significant and unusual investment of time for both presidents. Their talks included a working dinner of lobster tamales, Porterhouse steak and cherry pie prepared by celebrity chef Bobby Flay, and a morning walk through the manicured gardens of the 200-acre estate on the edge of the Mojave Desert.


During their walk, the leaders stopped to sit on a custom-designed park bench made of California redwood that Obama presented to Xi as a gift. The U.S. president told reporters that the talks were "terrific" as he and Xi walked side by side, both having ditched jackets and ties in a nod to the summit's informal atmosphere. The leaders closed the summit in low-key style, with no formal statements to the press, just a private tea with Xi's wife.


Obama and Xi did take a significant step toward tackling climate change, announcing that their countries had agreed for the first time to partner on reducing hydrofluorocarbons, a potent greenhouse gas used in refrigerators, air conditioners, and industrial applications. The discussions on North Korea also proved promising, Donilon said, with the leaders agreeing that North Korea has to be denuclearized and that neither country will accept the North as a nuclear-armed state. North Korea is estimated to have a handful of crude nuclear devices, with some analysts putting its arsenal at four to eight plutonium bombs.


While China is Pyongyang's strongest ally and economic benefactor, Xi has signaled a growing impatience with North Korea's unpredictable and provocative nuclear threats. "China has taken a number of steps in recent months to send a clear message to North Korea, including though enhanced enforcement of sanctions and through public statements by the senior leadership in China," Donilon said.


U.S. officials are hoping that Xi, who took office in March, proves to be a new brand of Chinese leader. He has deeper ties to the U.S. than his predecessors, given that he lived in Iowa briefly as a visiting official and sent his daughter to college in the U.S. The two leaders appear to have more in common than Obama had with former Chinese leader Hu Jintao, who often appeared stiff and formal in meetings. Both men are in their 50s and share a love of sports: swimming and soccer on Xi's side, basketball and golf on Obama's. Both are also married to glamorous, high-profile wives who have played a strong role in shaping their images.


While Xi's wife accompanied him to California, Michelle Obama stayed in Washington. The White House said late Saturday that she wrote Xi's wife a letter welcoming her to the United States and expressing regret for not seeing her this weekend.


Xi also appeared to relish in the more informal talks. An Obama administration official said he discussed at length growing up in the Chinese countryside during his country's cultural revolution and how the experience impacted his perspective on China's development. Xi also broke out a bottle of "Maotai," a famous Chinese liquor, to toast Obama during Friday's working dinner, according to the official, who insisted on anonymity in order to discuss the private meetings.


The two leaders will likely meet again in September, on the sidelines of an international economic summit in Russia. Xi also invited Obama to travel to China soon for a similarly informal round of one-on-one talks.


For Obama, the China summit marked the start of a heavy foreign policy-focused stretch that includes trips later this month to Europe and Africa. But domestic controversies are competing for his attention, including revelations that the National Security Agency has been secretly collecting massive amounts of data from U.S. phone and Internet companies.
